planning a retreat: fog + sage

have you ever considered attending or even hosting a creative, female-focused retreat in your community? let us introduce flynn coleman and stef etow, the fog + sage retreat curators. we chatted with them about who they are, their vision for fog + sage, and their advice for planning your very own retreat. read more:

flynn is an international human rights lawyer, a mindfulness and creativity teacher, an author, a tedx speaker, a social innovator, a former competitive athlete, a community builder, and a founder and ceo. Her core belief is that everyone has a voice that matters, and that we all have a story to tell. flynn holds a bsfs from georgetown university, a jd from uc berkeley school of law, and an llm from the london school of economics and political science.

stef is the visual brand storyteller and creator of ink and pulp. creativity is her engine in life, whether that’s re-thinking a fresh solution to an old problem or designing an alternative approach to online community building. stef believes that taking the time to build genuine connections is the most fulfilling practice as a professional and as a human. she has an ma in public art and urbanism from the university of chicago and a ba in art history and italian from the university of notre dame.

"fog + sage is our labor of love and the culmination of our complementary skills, ideas, and experiences. we share a passion for creativity, connection, social impact, self-care, and of course, storytelling. between the two of us, we’ve lived in 20 countries and we speak 7.5 languages. we also happen to care about animals, women-led businesses, slow fashion, and quiet spaces in thriving cities. we love to laugh and brainstorm at a local cafe, a ritual we've been sharing since we first met (on instagram!). stef takes her coffee black and flynn relishes her green tea."

tips from the ladies on planning your own retreat:

brainstorm the vision for the central message and mission of your retreat

decide who you want to reach with the mission and purpose of your retreat and make sure there is a need and that your message matches your mission

seek out the ideal location in which to create the experience you are hoping for

connect with compatible partners who share your vision, want to build a shared community with you, and who each bring their own brilliance and magic to the experience

spread the word far and wide with those who might want to be involved in the experience

work hard to make sure you stay true to the global vision, values, and purpose of your retreat, while also striving to make all the beautiful little details come together so everyone can have the most meaningful experience possible

seek to create a safe space for everyone to be themselves, to learn new things, and to walk away with their dream outcomes, fresh perspectives, and ready to take their experiences into their lives and into the world.

get excited, be proud, and marinate in the journey with your team and participants as you bask in the glow of the new community, friendships, lessons, and adventure you have found and shared together!
